The history of our folk group started in 1936. The first leader was a teacher of local school Stefan Visnovsky. The people cooperated with Ocean after 1945 were such personalities of Czechoslovakia folklore as Karol Plicka , Pavol Tonkovic, Svetozar Stracina, Stefan Nosal, Ladislav Leng ,Ondrej Demo and the others. The Ocovan was inexhaustible source of themes for the artistic design and custom preservation of Podpolanie region. Because of inimitable identity of dancers, musicians, and singers many of them become founders of the Slovak Folk Artist Ensemble. Jan Priechodsky is familiar personality of village culture. He has been created choreography and dramaturgy of programs from 1962. Intensive effort of young generation for to their own art conception on the subject of individual program themes has been clear since 1998. This reality has become visible in programs directed by Pavel Holik.
Folkloric ensemble is managed by municipal office Ocova. They share the same name Ocovan. The source of our art is village life. There is also tendency for clear
rendering of customs in their authenticity and conventionalization our own festivities.
The source of our themes are annual customs connected with work . Well known are tillage, seeding, first shepherd, last shepherd in the autumn, spin party and processing of feathers.
The next source is family life. I can mention wedding party, christening party and funeral. The program focus represents artistically procession traditional themes of folk craft and folkloric customs of the Podpolanie region belonging to Ocova. The choreography for
Ocovska nalada,(Ocova Mood) Satkovy tanec, (Scarf Dance) ,Cepikovy (Flails Dance) have been created by Jan Priechodsky ,Traja (three), Slnovrat (Solstice), V Ocovej na tanci, (Dancing in Ocova) by Pavol Holik ,Carovanie dievcat na Luciu (Witch on Lucy day) by Anna Hossova and Zivot v piesni (Life in the Song) by Maria Lalikova and Monika Holikova.
The creative ability of art demonstration is full transparent in programs Na Mitra (On Miter day) ,Ej Maje Maje (Oh May pole ,May Pole) ,Ocovska svadba (Ocova wedding)
Dozinky (Harvest-Home), Na sv.Jana -na Ocovskom salasi (On St John day- At Ocova shed).
In these programs are also presentations of whistle players, melancholic voice of fujara , exhibition of man singers where typical imperative songs are presented. Women argue songs are comped by Marek Pivoluska cymbalo ensemble.
Nowadays number of active members is 56.
Our programs were presented recently at festivals in Czech Republic, Italy, Croatia, Serbia, Hungary and also in Poland in Zakopane.
This year we performed our program at international festivals in Helpa, Detva, Liptovska Teplicka and some performances in towns and villages of Slovakia.
